What Can Acupuncture Help?

Acupuncture began over 2000 years ago and spread across Asia and the rest of the world. It is used to treat a wide range of conditions. If you are interested in research on acupuncture, I suggest you consult Pubmed. Acupuncture and other modalities (See Services Page) can help your body heal itself.

Pain Conditions:

  • Chronic Pain: This is perhaps the most popular reason people seek acupuncture. It's often used for:

    • Low back pain

    • Neck pain

    • Knee pain (especially related to osteoarthritis)

    • Headaches and migraines

    • Sciatica

    • Fibromyalgia

    • Postoperative pain

    • Dental pain

    • Muscle pain and cramping

    • Arthritis (including rheumatoid arthritis, though evidence for inflammatory markers is limited)

    • Foot pain

    • Shoulder Pain

    • Neuropathy

  • Acute Pain and injury: Acupuncturists are not primary care providers in Virginia. It is best to get a diagnosis from a Medical Doctor or Chiropractor. Acupuncture can often relieve acute pain in one or 2 treatments.

Stress Relief: One of the most immediate effects of acupuncture. Relaxation can help all other conditions heal more quickly

Nausea and Vomiting:

  • Acupuncture, particularly stimulating the P6 (Pericardium 6) acupoint on the wrist, has been shown to be effective in preventing and treating:

    • Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV)

    • Morning sickness

    • Nausea and vomiting related to chemotherapy (though the effect may be less significant than for PONV)

Mental Health:

  • Stress Relief: One of the most immediate effects of acupuncture. Relaxation can help all other conditions heal more quickly

  • Anxiety: Acupuncture is often used to help reduce stress and anxiety levels. Some studies suggest it can be particularly helpful for situational anxiety (e.g., pre-operative anxiety) and may complement conventional treatments.

  • Depression: While more research is needed, acupuncture is explored as a complementary therapy for depression, potentially by regulating neurotransmitter levels and promoting well-being.

  • Insomnia: Acupuncture may be helpful for those suffering from sleep disturbances.

Other Conditions:

  • Allergies and Sinus Issues: Conditions like rhinitis, sinusitis, and hay fever.

  • Gastrointestinal Disorders: Such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastritis, and constipation/diarrhea.

  • Gynecological Issues: Including menstrual pain, endometriosis, and some infertility issues.

  • Addiction: Acupuncture can be used to help ease withdrawal symptoms and support addiction recovery.

  • Stroke Rehabilitation: May assist in recovery from stroke.

Facial Rejuvenation: Tone and lift sagging muscles, improve circulation and complexion, relieve tension and pain, reduce fine lines and promote new collagen.
